Girls who Code Lincoln

Teaching girls to code through creativity, bravery, and teamwork.

Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit organization, dedicated to closing the technology gender gap. They've done this by creating a brand and a curriculum that can be implemented by anyone across the country. The curriculum has four main principles: teaching the "Core 4" (variables, loops, functions, conditionals), showing girls real-life women who do amazing things in tech, giving time to share experiences as girls in the world, and doing something with all this via the CS Impact Project. Find out more info about them here.

Girls Who Code (GWC) Lincoln began in January 2016 with the inspired gusto of Lana Zumbrunn (formerly at Fuse) and Jessica Versaw (Hudl). Since that time, dozens of girls across multiple clubs sites have had the opportunity to be exposed to coding and interact with leaders from the tech community. The girls have had opportunities to help plan and build community impact projects, and have presented at local tech meetups.

Lincoln Girls Who Code is run by a small group of advocates from across the tech community who meet at least once a month to strategize and ensure the ongoing success of the organization. There are several opportunities to get involved with Lincoln Girls Who Code, which you can check out here. Whether you’d just like to help facilitate one session of the club, or would like to have an ongoing role in the success of the organization, we’d love to hear from you.

  1. Think of a problem you'd like to solve, from a large global injustice to a daily annoyance. Imagine a technology that could solve that problem. Tell us about the problem and the solution.
  2. What are your science, math, or computer classes like? What is your experience as a girl in these classes? Do you think boys have a different experience? Why or why not? Tell us about it.
  3. Tell us about a time you worked on a team. How did working as a team help you accomplish a goal that would have been more difficult to accomplish as individuals? What did you learn? What could you have done differently?
